WISE Certification

WISE Certification Renewal: What Repair Businesses Need to Know
Construction Engineer

Getting WISE Certified is the visible milestone your business achieves.  It’s the badge on the storefront, the listing in the online directory, the line on a proposal that helps close a contract with a carrier or insurer. What gets less attention is that achieving WISE Certification does not mean attaining a permanent state. It's a standing that has to be actively maintained, on two separate timelines.  In fact, letting either one lapse undoes the work that went into earning it.

The Facility Renews Every Year

Authorized Service Provider (ASP) status is tied to the business, not the individual, and it renews annually. CTIA issues a license renewal agreement each year, and the fee to maintain ASP status is $400 per location or vehicle. Every retail location and every service vehicle is certified individually, which means a multi-location repair business is managing renewal across each site separately, not as a single blanket certification.

Technicians Renew on a Different Clock

Individual Technician Certification runs on its own schedule, separate from the facility's. Level 1 Certification, which is the knowledge-based credential, requires renewal every two years at $200. There's a notable exception as Chromebook Certification is a one-time credential with no renewal requirement at all, which makes it an outlier in the WISE structure and worth knowing if a technician's work is Chromebook-focused, rather than smartphone-focused.

Continuing Education Isn't Optional Once It's Assigned

WISE's curriculum isn't static. Continuing education requirements can be added to the certification curriculum over time (sometimes annually), and once assigned, technicians are responsible for completing them to remain eligible for recertification. This might arrive as an online module, a self-study reading, or a webinar, but the responsibility for tracking and completing it sits with the certified technician and, by extension, the business employing them. A shop that isn't watching for curriculum updates can find a technician's recertification blocked by a requirement nobody flagged in time.

New Hires Are on a Tighter Clock Than Renewals

Renewal isn't the only timeline that matters. New technicians have 60 days from their start date to complete both Level 1 and Level 2 WISE Certification. For a growing repair business bringing on staff regularly, that 60-day window needs to be built into onboarding as a hard deadline, not a loose goal, especially since Level 2 requires scheduling hands-on practical evaluation through a licensed Authorized Training Administrator, which takes lead time to arrange.

What's at Stake When Renewal Lapses

A lapsed certification doesn't just mean losing the right to display the WISE badge. It can mean losing eligibility for the programs that increasingly require WISE status as a prerequisite.  For instance, Samsung's Independent Service Provider Program and Amazon's Renewed Premium Program both require WISE Authorized Service Center Level 2 status specifically.  And Assurant requires WISE Certification across its North American in-network repair providers. For a business that has built partner relationships or contract eligibility around WISE status, a missed renewal date can quietly disqualify them from programs they're actively relying on for volume.

Treating Renewal as a Calendar Item, Not an Afterthought

The businesses that never face a renewal scramble are the ones tracking two separate calendars from day one:

1.The facility's annual ASP renewal, and

2.Each technician's individual certification clock.

Neither one is complicated in isolation. The risk comes from treating certification as a one-time achievement instead of an ongoing operational responsibility.
