What Is e-Stewards Certification

e-Stewards is an electronics recycling and ITAD certification created and administered by the Basel Action Network (BAN), the Seattle-based watchdog group that has spent more than two decades investigating where American e-waste really goes. BAN built the e-Stewards Standard for Responsible Recycling and Reuse of Electronic Equipment in direct response to a hard truth that electronics discarded in wealthy countries did not stay there. Such electronics were routinely ending up in poor countries on other continents, being dismantled by hand, often by underage workers. Usually, these are countries with no capacity to manage the toxic materials inside them.

The Standard requires certified processors to operate in full conformance with the Basel Convention, the United Nations hazardous waste treaty ratified by more than 190 countries. It prohibits the export of hazardous e-waste to developing nations, bans land dumping and incineration of e-waste residuals. It also prohibits the use of prison labor anywhere in the recycling chain. For companies in the ITAD and electronics recycling space, it is widely regarded as the most demanding standard in the industry. And it is one of the very few that verifies compliance in the field, not just on paper.

• A base environmental management system – organizations may choose either ISO 14001 Certification or RIOS Certification to meet this requirement, giving you flexibility to build on a system you may already hold.

• Documented downstream vendor management, since e-Stewards Certified Processors must vet and approve every Immediate Downstream Processor, and further downstream processors throughout the chain, before shipments occur.
