In contrast, Venky’s organization uses a hydrometallurgical process, which minimizes pollutants and maintains a closed-loop recovery system. This ensures traceability and accountability. Fundamentally, hydrometallurgical techniques are far better and superior to pyrometallurgical smelting as the former allow for the higher traceability and accountability of materials. Hydrometallurgical techniques produce no greenhouse gas emissions, given the closed loop process, and offer 99% process efficiency. This process contributes to strengthening the secondary raw materials market supply chain, and leads to the preservation of natural resources. Additionally, the resulting end product is of highest purity, and this is achieved with reduced energy consumption. And last, but not least, hydrometallurgical techniques allow for a safe work environment, and comply with all the national and international EHS standards.
When discussing the importance of certifications, Venky points out, "The industry has come a long way in realizing the need for environmental regulations." Certifications, such as to R2 and ISO standards, play a crucial role in establishing accountability and traceability in e-waste management. "Every client is looking to meet strong ESG goals," Venky adds, emphasizing that compliance both fulfills regulatory requirements and enhances compliance to corporate social responsibility commitments.
Venky Murthy notes that, unlike localized regulations, certifications provide a global standard, allowing companies to operate internationally. "These certifications are like a passport," he states, allowing businesses to engage with clients across the globe. As the e-waste recycling industry progresses, Venky identifies several challenges. "Technological advancements are outpacing our ability to adapt," he explains. With the rapid changes and advancements in electronic products and technologies (e.g., AI and blockchain), recycling companies must continuously update their processes, knowledge, and expertise.

"Unlike other sectors, our industry lacks standardized criteria for who can be a recycler," he notes.
