ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety Management

ISO 45001 is an international standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S) management systems.  It provides a framework for organizations to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks, and create better, safer working conditions.  Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in March 2018, ISO 45001 replaces the previous standard, OHSAS 18001.

Key Features of ISO 45001 include:

Risk-Based Approach – ISO 45001 emphasizes a proactive approach to identifying and managing OH&S risks, enabling your organization to prevent accidents and incidents before they occur.  This means your organization is required to take certain steps that will position you better against risks.  When your organization earns ISO 45001 Certification, you must conduct regular assessments to identify potential hazards in the workplace.  You must also valuate the likelihood and severity of identified risks to prioritize actions.  This, in turn, leads you to establish control measures to mitigate these risks, ensuring a safer work environment.  A study by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that organizations adopting a risk-based approach saw a 50% reduction in workplace injuries over three years.

Integration with Other Management Systems – The ISO 45001 standard is designed to be compatible with other ISO management system standards, such as ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), facilitating a holistic approach to organizational management, becoming better integrated.  Your organization streamline processes by combining health and safety management with quality and environmental practices, reducing duplication.  As a result, this holistic management fosters a culture of continuous improvement across all areas of your organization.  For instance, Siemens has successfully integrated ISO 45001 with its ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 systems, leading to a unified management approach that improved overall efficiency and reduced administrative burdens.

Focus on Leadership and Worker Participation – ISO 45001 encourages top management to take an active role in promoting OH&S and emphasizes the importance of worker participation in the development and implementation of safety practices.  By achieving ISO 45001 Certification your organization’s leaders are responsible for promoting a strong safety culture and ensuring resources are available for OH&S initiatives.  Additionally, your organization’s employees are encouraged to participate in safety discussions, risk assessments, and the development of safety policies.  Organizations that promote leadership and worker involvement report up to 30% fewer workplace accidents, according to data from the National Safety Council.

Continuous Improvement – The ISO 45001 standard promotes a culture of continual improvement in health and safety management.  Your organization must regularly track OH&S performance through audits, inspections, and incident reporting.  This requires disciplined monitoring and measurement.  You must use received feedback and data to refine safety processes and policies continually.  For example, Nestlé implemented a continuous improvement program under ISO 45001 that led to a consistent year-over-year reduction in workplace incidents by 20%, demonstrating the effectiveness of ongoing evaluation and adaptation.

Documentation and Record-Keeping – ISO 45001 requires organizations to maintain adequate documentation and records to support their OH&S management system. This means that your organization must have clearly defined safety policies and procedures that are accessible to all employees.  You must also keep clear documentation of employee training on safety practices and procedures to ensure compliance and awareness.  Organizations with robust documentation practices experience 40% fewer compliance-related incidents, as noted by the International Association of Occupational Safety and Health.

Fundamentally, your organization will rest on a safer and more secure foundation when you earn ISO 45001 Certification.
